Among The Ruins

Here, where history was once
played out as present day,
canons congregated in cloisters
and carried out the mundane tasks
of everyday living.

Here, parishioners prayed and practiced
their faith in areas now exposed.
Today their prayers would have been
carried on the wind.....
maybe they were then,
perhaps they still linger!

Walking here among the ruins
treads time, follows footsteps
of kings and queens who
regaled this place of religion
with royal visits.

In the quiet that resides here
those who no longer tread this soil
rest in peace, protected by
the priory walls.
One only young, the son
of a king.

Here, among the ruins
present day mingles with history.
Eager eyes search for pellets
left by owls, looking for clues as
to their last lunch!

Here, hiding behind walls that
                                                   still stand straight and steady,
little people laugh at how
cleverly they are concealed,
convinced they won't be found.

Life was lived here,
prayers were said here,
those who no longer lived
were laid to rest here.
Life goes on here among the ruins.

Teaching Me

Teaching Me

As I cosy you down into your beds,
kiss your lips and soothe your heads,
I think of how I've grown,
what I've become
since I first became your mum.
Everyday there is something new,
something fun for us to do.
Everyday we learn together,
we explore, we discover,
we cuddle and blether.
You inspire me with
your sense of awe
I hope your wide eyed wonder
will never thaw.
I hope you'll always see magic
in the tiniest things,
a colourful stone,
a butterfly's wings.
I hope you'll always run with joy
to the shore,
look to the horizon
and want to learn more.
You're both kind and caring,
you understand what's wrong
and what's right.
For the things you believe in
I hope you always will fight.
Looking into the future I
imagine what you will be.
At this moment in time
you're still teaching me.
